Well, I'm glad that it's a different style of fighter and he's more my height.

I'm focused on fighting David Haye and then trying to unify the titles afterward. Right now, the Klitschkos don't want to fight anybody, so after beating Haye, I may have to…I can't hang around waiting for these guys to want to fight somebody…The Klitschkos have been there, but they handpick their opponents. I think Bernard Hopkins is moving up too, so maybe that's a name I could throw out there. He'll definitely fight anybody," stated former heavyweight champion John Ruiz as he talked about his upcoming clash with WBA heavyweight champion David Haye and much more. Check it out!

MJ: Tell us about your situation with the title shot versus David Haye.

JR: I'm glad they're giving me the opportunity again. I'm glad it's not versus Valuev. It's going to be a different face and hopefully it's going to be in England and not in Germany, where you could never get a decision. I'm happy to be going back over there; it's going to be my seventh time in England.

MJ: Is the fight official at this point? Do we have a date?

JR: They keep talking about April 3, but that's not yet for sure. They're talking about doing it in Manchester, but I don't know for sure where it will be.

MJ: How do you feel you match up against Haye?

JR: Well, I'm glad that it's a different style of fighter and he's more my height. The key part about fighting Haye is that the fight he lost was against a guy with the same style that I fight. If you come out and pressure the guy, you can get a win against Haye. That's my key to the fight. He's more vulnerable to the way I fight, so I have a good chance.

MJ: How is training going?

JR: Everything is going well right now. We're hoping it gets announced soon so we can have a date in mind. Right now, I'm just taking it easy.

MJ: Any predictions for the fight with Haye?

JR: I'm not much of a prediction kind of guy, but at the same time, I feel good. I have a new promoter and a new trainer. I feel great; the best I've ever felt. I feel happy for myself with where I am in my life. Sometimes when you have that clear mind, you tend to fight better. I'm going to go in there and fight the best I can.

MJ: Can you tell us about how your style has evolved over time?

JR: At first, I was more of a boxer-puncher. After awhile, I became a brawler; but now, with Miguel Diaz and Richie Sandoval, they're bringing me back to my old style where I was more of a boxer-puncher.

MJ: After this title shot, how much longer do you plan on fighting?

JR: I'd definitely get out soon. I give myself two more years. Hopefully, everything will go well and I can do enough in those two years to become champion again and defend it. For me, I give myself two years and from there, I'll have to make a decision to move on with my life. I have a baby now and I want to spend more time with him. Hopefully, everything goes well.

MJ: What do you think about fighters like James Toney trying to make a crossover into MMA?

JR: You know, if it works for them, that's good. Sometimes, in the heavyweight division, nobody wants to fight anybody. Sometimes you have to move on to the people who want to fight. That's big now, the MMA. Everywhere you go, that's stuff people are talking about nowadays.

MJ: Is that a guy you'd ever want to rematch?

JR: For me, right now I'm focused on fighting David Haye and then trying to unify the titles afterward. Right now, the Klitschkos don't want to fight anybody, so after beating Haye, I may have to do that too because I can't hang around waiting for these guys to want to fight somebody.

MJ: So that's the fight you want next, with one of the Klitschkos?

JR: The Klitschkos have been there, but they handpick their opponents. I think Bernard Hopkins is moving up too, so maybe that's a name I could throw out there. He'll definitely fight anybody.

MJ: Do you think it's tougher fighting the big guys like the Klitschkos or the little guys like Roy Jones or Bernard Hopkins?

JR: You know, I definitely love fighting the taller guys. I feel a lot more comfortable fighting the taller guys because there is only one way to fight them; one gameplan. That's going inside and working the body.

MJ: If you were to win the title again, is there any chance you'd give Chris Arreola a title shot so that we can get the Mexico-Puerto Rico rivalry going at the heavyweight level?

JR: Actually, someone was talking to me about that. Golden Boy Promotions, they're from California and you have Chris Arreola, who is from the same area. That would definitely be a good fight.

MJ: Would you want to ever fight on the eve of the Puerto Rican parade in New York?

JR: I think there were some plans before, but they never went through. One of these days, it definitely would be a good time to fight. There are tons of Puerto Ricans in New York and Puerto Ricans from all over the world who come to the parade. It would be the perfect time.

MJ: Are there any losses from your career that you'd like to avenge?

JR: Of course the Tua fight. We tried to get that rematch, but we never got the opportunity. Maybe one day, we could. That's one fight that I would like to have redone. There were other ones that were close where I felt I got the win, but the judges called it the other way.

MJ: Going back to the Klitschkos, how do you think the brothers compare to some of the great recent fighters like Lewis and Holyfield?

JR: I wouldn't quite put them on that level yet. Those guys were great champions. Holyfield was a warrior and he fought whoever was there. There's also Riddick Bowe and Mike Tyson; he fought everybody. These guys weren't scared; they were there to fight and that's what they did. Then the Klitschkos come in and if they feel like they're going to lose a fight, they'd rather just retire and then come back later on. That's their mentality; they'd rather take the easy fight and make the money. I wish I had that kind of lifestyle, taking easy fights and making a ton of money (laughing). But that's not what boxing is all about. It's about fighting the best out there and making sure that you take on everybody to prove to everyone that you're the best.

MJ: With all of this talk about drug testing, how do you feel about the current drug testing protocol in boxing?

JR: I think they need to change it because in reality, you get tested after the fight. People are doing their best to try and mask it and hope it's out of their system by the time they get tested. They definitely need something, maybe two or three weeks before the fight and after the fight, just to make sure that the guy is not doing any steroids or whatever.

MJ: Do you think they need blood testing?

JR: Probably because I think many people are trying to mask it with other things.

MJ: Once your career is said and done, how do you want to be remembered by boxing fans?

JR: For myself, I feel blessed and lucky. At the same time, I'm happy with my career. I know it's been up and down and there have been some things in my career I would love to change, but I'm happy. There's not too many people who can say they were two-time heavyweight champion, also the first Latino heavyweight champ. I'm happy with myself and I hope people can remember me in a positive way. That's all you can hope for.

MJ: Is there anything you'd like to say in closing to the FightHype.com fans?

JR: I want to say thank you to all the fans who have supported me through the years. It's been a long road, but it's not quite finished yet. I hope I can take this fight with Haye and put on a good show for them. Thank you for being there through those ups and downs.

Because Valuev-Ruiz went to purse bid, Ruiz argued that according to the WBA’s Championship regulations there was a “net” purse rule in effect requiring any German taxes to be paid by the promoter, Sauerland Event, and could not be deducted from his purse. Last Friday, Team Ruiz was notified that the WBA had ruled in Ruiz’ favor, declaring that at the time of the Ruiz/Valuev bout its purse bid regulations intended and required that there could be no deductions from a foreign boxer’s purse by the winner of the purse bid. The WBA also announced that in the future, its purse bid regulations would operate on a “gross” basis, where the German tax on foreign boxers could be appropriately deducted by the winning promoter.

It’s been a long road, starting on the streets...

Final chapter hasn’t been written by “The Quietman” Ruiz

LAS VEGAS (March 6, 2009) – Two-time WBA heavyweight champion John “The Quietman” Ruiz has one final chapter to live before his boxing career is finished: to capture another world title, defend his belt back home in Massachusetts, and fight for the first time in Puerto Rico.

The WBA Championship Committee recently declared No. 3 rated Ruiz (43-8-1, 29 KOs) as its mandatory challenger for the winner of this year’s Nicolai Valuev-Ruslan Chagaev WBA title fight. Valuev is the reigning WBA heavyweight champion, Chagaev its “Champion in Recess.”

The ruling stems from a petition filed by Team Ruiz after last August’s WBA title fight, when John lost a 12-round “split decision” decision to Nicolai Valuev, in which, Team Ruiz claimed, based on a Russian TV footage, Valuev’s corner knew the scoring during the bout and before the official announcement of the result, which is a substantial violation of the WBA rules considered an unfair advantage. Also argued was that judge Takeshi Shimakawa improperly kept a running-score during the fight, explaining why he changed his final round scoring, five minutes after the fight had ended, from Ruiz to Valuev.

“I’m excited about the WBA making me the mandatory challenger and grateful to my manager, Tony Cardinale, and lawyer, attorney Judd Berstein, for fighting so hard on my behalf,” Ruiz said. “It’s been a long road, starting on the streets of Chelsea (Mass.), and fighting all over the world. My final chapter in boxing is coming and I hope it ends with another world title. I also want to show my appreciation to my fans in Massachusetts and Puerto Rico. I was raised in the Boston area and I’d like to fight there again, hopefully in a world title fight. My brothers, sister and some distant cousins live there. But I’ve never fought in Puerto Rico, where a lot of my family lives -- my mother, uncles, aunts and a lot of first cousins. They’ve always supported me and I definitely would like to fight there before I retire.

“I only lived in Puerto Rico for a year, when I was five, but I do have some memories of San Grande, especially the stadium where my relatives played ball at, and later where I was honored before a capacity crowd after I won the world title for the first time. The 1 ½ ride from San Juan to San Grande took eight hours because of all the people on the streets showing their support for me. I want to give back to them and my fans in Massachusetts before I move on with the rest of my life.”

Ruiz lost controversial 12-round decisions in Germany to Valuev and Chagaev. In a pair of WBA title fights with Valuev, Ruiz lost by majority decision in 2005 and last year in the aforementioned calamity, as well as by split decision to Chagaev in their 2006 WBA title eliminator.

Open letter from John Ruiz to the
Top American Heavyweights

To America’s “Top” Heavyweight Boxers,

I’ve been told I’m not the most fan-friendly fighter in the world, my style often criticized as being ugly, but I’m proud to say I’ve never ducked a worthy opponent. For the past month or two, though, I’ve read and heard a lot BS about how I shouldn’t be the WBA mandatory title challenger. A few totally unproven, so-called contenders have whined about them deserving a world title shot more than I do.

Why? Who have Chris Arreola, Eddie Chambers, Kevin
Johnson or Brian Minto beaten to deserve a world title shot? Nobody! Just compare my list of victories to yours. You guys haven’t come close to doing what I’ve accomplished.

I’ve been where you’re trying to get – 11 world title fights (2 WBA titles) -- and I’m even willing to risk my WBA mandatory title shot next year against the Chagaev-Valuev II winner just to show everyone that I’m entitled to another world championship fight. Prove me wrong. Stop all of the smack talk, try and beat me in the ring. – the only place it really counts -- to be the real No. 1 American heavyweight. Next year, I’ll be fighting for the crown again unless one of you pretenders step-up and change my schedule.

Show the boxing world that you’re a true contender, not a pretender. You want it, come and get it – put your money where your mouth is. No more excuses, just contact my attorney Tony Cardinale (your promoters know how), and let’s make it happen.

L AS VEGAS - David Haye has no idea what’s coming next. When it comes to fighting John Ruiz, no one ever does.

Haye sat in a well-appointed restaurant at Mandalay Bay casino yesterday, his newly won WBA heavyweight title belt wrapped around his waist, and talked of Vitali Klitschko and Wladimir Klitschko and which one he wants to fight first. He talked about all the things you talk about when you don’t know what you’re talking about.

David Haye has been dismissed as a ‘talker and a runner’ by his next opponent John Ruiz.

Beaten: John Ruiz (right) lost to Nikolai Valuev

The Briton may have beaten Russian giant Nikolai Valuev to secure the WBA world
heavyweight title last weekend, but Ruiz was unimpressed.

Despite earning the nickname ‘the quiet man’ over the years, the mandatory challenger has been prodded into throwing a few early verbal shots by Haye’s infamously loud approach.

Ruiz, expected to fight for his third WBA belt at the O2 Arena in March or April, said: ‘Haye is a guy who is a talker and, from what I saw the other night, he is a runner, too.
‘I expect him to do all the talking, but in the ring I expect him to do all the running. He will be a tough opponent but he doesn’t worry me one bit. I have been in a lot of fights and some of them got pretty ugly. The words don’t bother me at all.’

Haye repeatedly insulted Valuev in the build-up to their bout in Germany before succeeding thanks to a narrow points verdict.

He has also left the impression that beating Ruiz will be a formality on the way to a more lucrative unification showdown with WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko.

But the Puerto Rican, 37, who was paid £120,000 to step aside and allow Haye to challenge Valuev, insists he will be a worthy opponent. ‘I am always proving people wrong,’ said Ruiz.

‘He can talk all he wants, make himself feel better or whatever he needs to do to be ready for this fight because he needs to be prepared.

‘The beauty of boxing is that you have to step into the ring sooner or later and see who is the best.

‘It is all about winning. You can talk all you want, but you have to prove what you have been saying.’
